Synesketch is an artistic software library with synesthetic abilities, created by Uroš Krčadinac. It is a Web's first free open-source textual emotion recognition and visualization engine – code that feels the words visually!
This new media art installation and software innovation serves as a bridge between words, emotions, and images; between poetry and painting. While you type, Synesketch dynamically transfers the text into animated visual patterns.

Yellowtail was my first experiment into the design of an environment for the simultaneous creation of both sound and image. It evolved out of an earlier silent piece, called Curly, which I developed in September of 1998. Although Yellowtail eventually fell short of achieving a wholly painterly interface for real-time audiovisual performance—its final design is fundamentally diagrammatic—it was nevertheless an important milestone in the evolution of my thesis work. As we shall see, Yellowtail served as the model against which the goals of this thesis developed in contradistinction.

Mobile works of note

This fascinating Near Field Communication (NFC) project involving projecting mobiles hints at the way two art works could interact, or two ReacTickles, should the camera phones possess the abilities to project and also pick up interaction on surfaces in the way demonstrated in this clip. You could instigate live performance in this way, certainly play together, or offer assistance and advice for other playing with the ReacTickles. The fact that it works so well in this demonstration for two users makes you wonder how it might work for larger groups?
RJDJ iPhone Application
As described by their website, the rjdj application for the iPhone '(…) is promoting a music genre that we call “reactive”. The sound that listeners hear is produced by digital devices in the very moment it is listened to. Composers of reactive music often make heavy use of sensory input, which makes the environment of the listener part of the music that is heard. Compositions are called “Scenes”. Scenes have a different musical structure than traditional compositions and they often have no clear beginning and end. Some scenes promote active listener involvement and others promote passive listening. In any case, when listening to RjDj, take care and enjoy your mind twisting hearing sensations.'

It has been gathering some interest from interaction designers although the context in which you use it is been seen as its biggest stumbling block, with noisy ambient environments really rendering it unusable in some peoples view…
